Fresh from Mex

Mexico City's art scene is hopping, and Reno will host a few of its art stars in 2017. NEVADA MUSEUM OF ART CURATOR JOANNE NORTHRUP visited in february and shared a few trip notes.

First stop: ZsONA MACO

Zsona Maco is an annual showcase that bills itself as "Latin America’s most important contemporary art fair." Northrup got to know the director of Kurimanzutto Gallery, which appears to be the Mexico City gallery world's hottest ticket.

I was very excited to make connection with the gallery that represents Mexican artist Minerva Cuevas and see numerous examples of her work that otherwise I only knew from Internet research. She did a fascinating series on chocolate that’s of great interest to me. I intend to include her work in the 2017 conference season exhibition that I am working on titled Unsettled.

In past work, Cuevas has remixed logos and brand identities to critique injustices in the food and oil industries. In more recent work, she uses chocolate as a material and delves into colonialism.

Next stop: Bestabee Romero's studio

Romero addresses consumer culture and traditional culture on a few levels at once, uses car bodies as art supplies, tires as sculpture materials, and custom-designed tire treads as printmaking tools. Her work appeared at the NMA last year.

“We visited her studio to see her new work, and more importantly saw her show and attended a special reception at the Museo Anahuacalli, Diego Rivera’s temple-like museum devoted to pre-Hispanic art. Betsabee is the first Mexican artist to have been honored with an exhibition at this museum.

NEXT stop: MUAC (Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporaneo

Here, Northrup saw some work by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, a Mexican-Canadian artist who makes interactive, tech-based installations and explores topics such as surveillance, privacy, and national identity. Northrup has long been a fan.

I plan to include his work in the Unsettled exhibition as well and we had never met in person. Fortunately he had a huge exhibition at the University Museum MUAC. I was able to meet him in person and see a wide array of his extremely intelligent work. I’d like to invite him to be a speaker at the 2017 Conference.
