Transporting the Portal
I was riding my bike downtown today and I saw a huge, steel butterfly wing lying on the grass and another wing being hoisted by a forklift. It's the Portal of Evolution, a sculpture by Bay Area artist Brian Tedrick that's been in City Plaza since 2012.
"Where's it going?" I asked the man guiding the wing that was dangling from the forklift.
He directed me to the spot on First Street, across from Stevenson Street, right where the pedestrian bridge crosses the whitewater park, between Arlington and Ralston.
"The City bought it," he told me.
I biked over to First Street, where sculptor Jeff Schomberg was driving another forklift, lowering the sculpture's base onto a concrete pad.
Jeff said the Portal should be fully installed some time this afternoon.
